I met a girl who plays the pipa,
A four-stringed Chinese lute.
As we talked about music,
I mentioned that I had played
Wrong notes the last time
I played with people. I am done.
She said, My teacher says,
Unless you are a professional,
The technique is less important
Than the spirit.
I’m not sure I have the spirit needed—
I would like more courage—
But the spirit, at least, I can attempt.
