Israel had twelve sons
From two wives and two concubines.
Oldest cast aside for sleeping with his dad’s wife.
Next two cast aside for their violent slaughter
Of an entire city.
And the favorite sons of the favorite wife
Did not receive the inheritance.
Judah, fourth-born son of the less-loved wife,
Carries the lineage.
So the birthright is not entirely age-based,
But also meritorious?
