I think about Jesus, born of a virgin.
As if that story would be believed.
The story of his illegitimate birth
Followed from Bethlehem to Egypt
To Nazareth, Capernaum, Jerusalem.
The bastard, speaking about God.
“We have Abraham to our father,”
Implying, “Too bad no one knows
Who yours is. Except your mother.”
As if any girl in an agricultural society
Would think it a good excuse to invent
A virgin birth. And then stick with that
Story for decades to come.
Please.
Doesn’t the very irrationality of the claim
Make it more believable?
As does the account of the mean gossip,
Dogging the footsteps
Of the Son of God.
