Awake

I usually meet sleep interruptions
With equanimity, if not full coherence.
That is, after all, a large part of parenting.

But every once in a while comes a moment
When every part of my body craves rest
And the sad child cannot communicate

What comfort he requires. I understand then
Why torturers use forced wakefulness.
And that, too, is part of parenting.
