She Hath Done What She Could

Jesus told his disciples that he was going to die.
They manifestly did not understand.

A woman poured ointment of spikenard on his head.
Jesus understood: anointing his body for burial.

It’s hard to fathom a year’s wages,
Forty thousand dollars, spilled out. Extravagant.

In the face of common sense anger, Jesus rebukes.
“She hath done what she could.”

She could believe what Jesus said.
And as he faced abuse, taunts, crucifixion,

The smell of her belief went with him,
Anointing his body for burial.
