School

In a giant tank with surprisingly few creatures,
What kept our attention long and longer
Was the silver school of fish, circling near the bottom.

The hammerhead, perhaps bored, kept dive-bombing,
And the school would flicker away,
Changing in an instant from calm to panicked.

To watch those thousands of fish scatter and recombine
In three dimensions
Was an unexpected treat.
