In 2015, American Pharaoh,
With his typo-name,
Won the first Triple Crown
In my lifetime.
(I was born just a few months too late.)
Some said there would never be another,
That horses were faster these days,
That three races in five weeks was too grueling.
Twenty horses in those thirty-seven years
Won two out of three,
But all three . . . it’s just so hard.
Only three years later,
Justify in 2018
Took the lead at the Belmont Stakes,
That grueling track with such long turns
It almost feels like there are no turns at all,
And became
The thirteenth immortal.
