Harsh: Advent XIII

Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

The angel of the LORD could have appeared
Before Mary was even found to be pregnant.
That would have spared Joseph a good deal.

Instead, he went through turmoil and pain:
Unwelcome news,
An unbelievable explanation,
A painful interlude of trying to determine
What the right course of action might be.

And in the midst of all this churning thought
Comes the freedom of a dream.
