Eight Miles

When the doctor designed special shoes
For leprosy patients, he couldn’t figure out
Why they kept getting blisters.

A healthy man volunteered to walk eight miles,
Wearing special socks that showed the pressure points.
He changed socks every two miles,

And, in the end, they found that
The pressure points had changed each time,
As the walker shifted his gait subtly.

Those without feeling in their feet never change.
And I forget how they solved this problem,
But, more, I am astonished that anyone thought to test.
