A lecture on Shakespeare’s great comedy
Demonstrates that all the true lovers
In this play turn extraordinarily generous,
Giving lavish gifts and compliments,
While Malvolio, that old steward,
When he believes one is in love with him,
Thinks only of self-aggrandizement
And the revenge he will be able to exact
On his antagonists. Clearly, not a lover.
This, then, raises an interesting point:
Am I generous in my love,
Thrilled to be loved at all,
Despite my imperfections?
Or am I more like Malvolio,
Full of self-aggrandizement?
