When we awoke to the random fire alarm
At 4am, there was no sign of smoke,
But the dogs were in the trash
Just outside the window.
It seemed better to head off the
Strewing, so I cleaned up the mess.
An owl screamed next door.
It was dark and cool, with fireflies dancing,
Not a bad way to spend a quarter hour.
As I walked past my one remaining hive,
I was surprised by the volume of hum
Radiating into the night.
Are the bees always this loud, but
Ambient noise obscures their production?
I prefer to think this is an extra pleasure for the awake ones,
A hymn of praise for May and flowers and coolness,
Too much glory to finish celebrating just because
The sun went down.
