Supplements

Nutritional therapists will,
Apparently,
Determine which supplements
You need,
Which you are taking that are
No good.

I wonder if I could figure it out

With applied kinesiology.

Joe, Age 9

Well, future two-digit self,
I wonder what kind of presents you're going to get.
I wonder what kind of cake you're going to have.
I wonder if you're going to have trick candles.
And always, always remember to look
At your blue wardrobe and see Jake.

And always, always remember:
"You'll never feel as tall as when you're ten."
And remember that that's from

I'm Just No Good at Rhyming

Fascinating

Amyloid plaque is in healthy brains—
Doctors now wonder if it is part of the body’s protection.

Cancer, those multiplicating cells—
Could this be the body’s response to invasion,
Turning some cells immortal?

Autoimmune conditions—
Could it be that Epstein-Barr attacks organs,
So when the body attacks the thyroid, say,
It’s actually doing what it should, as best it can?

I naturally gravitate towards the idea that

The body is always doing the best it can with what it has.

First Day of School

Caleb officially started kindergarten today:
Math
Handwriting
Reading Readiness
Bible
Read-alouds

He already knew much of what we did,
So we’ll move forward speedily
Until we get to new information.

Until then: a lot of laughter.

Not Worth It

I chose to eat wheat
For the second time this summer.
In retrospect, it was not a good choice.

I was unusually exhausted,
With brain fog driving home,
Just out of it.

Whatever I ate was not worth it.

Mom Fail

My son woke up and threw up.
On asking, it turned out
I’d not prepared him a plate for food,
And so he’d gone without.

Except pork rinds.

The pork rinds probably made him
Full enough,
He didn’t think to ask for more.

Three vomits,
Two cans of Coke,
Pepperoni, and
One strawberry smoothie later,

He was fine.

Party

For four hours we
Rolled dumplings,
Powdered calamari,
Rolled sushi.

We don’t eat wheat,
But this was a birthday meal
For a friend,

So we served ourselves with a will.
I ate ten dumplings,
Some number of sushi rolls,
Two helpings of calamari.

I had forgotten there was
Key lime pie with Cool Whip and
Lemon cheesecake with chocolate crust
For dessert.

My stomach hurts,
But I’m not sure that’s because

Of the wheat.
